Do I Want a Wireless or Wired Network?

That depends on what you plan to use your Internet connection for. Each one comes with its own advantages and its own drawbacks.

Wired Network from Professional Residential & Office Services Inc.

A wired network has two basic components, the modem and the Ethernet cable. The modem is the part that connects you to the vast universe of the Internet; it has several Ethernet ports on the back. Ethernet cables connect your TV, computer, and other appliances into the modem.

The advantage of a wired home network is that it can maintain a high-speed connection more efficiently. This is a great system if you’re planning on hooking up your TV to the Internet to watch movies and TV shows. It’s also great if you plan on using your Internet connection to play online video games. The connection will never drop, and the speeds will always remain at peak levels.

The disadvantage is that you need to plug your devices directly into the cables; which means no portability. Most mobile devices do not have Ethernet ports on them, so you would be able to get Internet on your smartphone, tablet, or E-reader.

Wireless Network from Professional Residential & Office Services Inc.

Wireless networks also use a modem to connect online, but they have an extra component called a router. The router is the piece which receives the data from the modem and then turns it into a wireless signal. Sometimes the modem is connected to the router by an Ethernet cable and other times the router is built right into the modem. The wireless signal has a limited range, but within that range, anyone with the password can connect to it.

This is the obvious choice for consumers who do not need to worry about losing their connection every now and then. If the connection is lost, a simple restart will normally be enough to get it back again. It’s easy to connect a wireless router to a TV or even a projector for your home theater system. All your mobile devices will be able to connect to it as well, meaning you can walk around your Edmonton house or apartment and still get a signal.

Wireless networks are especially handy if you’re interested in home automation. You can connect your lights, security system, garage door opener, or thermostat to your wireless network. You’ll be able to monitor them at a distance through online apps. Program and control your thermostat from your phone or if you’re on vacation and your garage door opens, you’ll get a notification asking what you’d like to do about it.
